Girls Varsity Tennis Write-Up

Updated: Oct 29, 2019

- Carolyn Finerman

Girls Varsity Tennis surely had a busy and worthwhile week of play. Starting on Monday, GVT kicked off the week playing Sacred Heart. Fieldston won the match 3-2, although a seemingly close match, we played very well. With the tough conditions of extreme wind the players adapted particularly well to the surroundings. Sacred Heart, not being a league match, prepped the team for Friday’s match against Trinity. This was the first round of the Ivy’s which GVT had a pretty good shot at. The previous match against Trinity had been lost 2-3, but Fieldston was ready to bounce back and fight for the win. Zoe Kava, (senior) Fieldston’s number one and an insanely awesome college athlete, had a great but tough match with Trinity’s number one player, demonstrating her talent although not with the desired outcome. Additionally, a key player who has shined all season is Katie Finerman. A freshman this year, although arguably the team’s MVP, Finerman has gone throughout the season undefeated and brings a positive attitude and tremendous potential and skill to the team. Finerman won in two sets against a tough opponent with a score of 6-4 6-3. First doubles also had a notable match; with a score of 5-7 3-6 Electa McHenry-Assaf (junior) and Caroline Lesser (junior) were almost at the finish line, but sadly just lost. However, the teams chemistry on the court is undeniable and the two function seamlessly while playing. Second doubles with Jahnavi Kirtane (senior) and Eliza Sirovich (sophomore) also had a great match and got to three sets, but were slightly outplayed in the last set. Additionally, Carolyn Finerman (junior) had a solid match against Trinity’s number two player––a three setter, with a few key points separating the win and loss. Sadly, round one of the Ivy’s did not receive the outcome we would’ve liked, although everyone played really great tennis. Saturday Fieldston took on Horace Mann at their homecoming, but with loss of two key players were not able to pull out the dub. Stay tuned for Fieldston’s favorite team taking on the backdraw of the Ivy’s next week!
