Girls Varsity Soccer

- Owen Schacht

This year was an incredible year for the soccer teams, boys and girls alike. Girls Varsity Soccer went far this season, although they sadly lost to Poly Prep in the semi-finals. However, this was the furthest the team has made it since 2011. In the words of head coach Mike Martino, “I feel the girls played very well this year. Each person on the roster played an important role on the team and led us to having a great season.” Former coach, Chelsea Volpe, said: “I was only able to make it to two games this year, so it was hard to compare this season to past seasons. However, I did enjoy watching them play this year and I miss it. I hope to be back soon.” Coach Volpe began her career coaching GVS in 2005 and made it to the semi-finals in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, and 2011, making it to the finals in 2006 and 2007. Coach Volpe and GVS also won the Ivy League championship in 2009.

This season, the girls were going into the playoffs with an 8-3-6 record, coming off of a loss to Poly Prep. They won their first round game of the NYSAIS to L.R.E.I. and their second game to the Spence school, but they lost their third game to Poly Prep. Coach Martino said that “Every moment this season was prosperous. I think everyone in the program learned and grew from the experience this year. No one expected us to make the playoffs, let alone achieve a spot in the semis. The team showed that hard work, determination and playing with grit pays off.” Lexi Madsen (V) commented on the team chemistry stating, “as a team, we click well on and off the field. We all get along really well which I think added to the fact that we were able to play better with each other this season.” She also had thoughts on the upcoming season saying that, “although we are losing 9 seniors going into next year, I think that we will still do well and maintain a really solid team. I think that the chemistry we have this year will carry into next year and that we will be able to maintain the level of play that we achieved this year.” Madsen, having been on the team for her entire high school career, has encountered unsuccessful seasons in her first two years, and this was a nice change of pace for her and the other girls on the team.

After a year that had some challenges, where, as Coach Martino said “we were plagued with some major injuries,” the team went out with a bang. They lost to the number one seed Poly Prep and hope to crush them in the years to come! Coach gave some inspiring words that will help bring the team into the following season. “You have to invest and believe in the process, while knowing that those on your team will support, help, guide and always have each-others backs.” It's visible that the players and coaches in the GVS program are ready to make some noise come fall of 2020, and continue to build on this successful season.”
